The typical business owner-manager is a small business owner-manager

The owner-manager is also commonly referred to as the business operator and owner of an incorporated or non-incorporated business

In 2012, the ABS (8175.0, 2013), found the typical Australian small business owner-manager, to be:

  • Male (66.7%)
    He will be most likely to be aged between 45 to 54 years old (27.9%) family man (87%), with a Year 12 education (51.3%) and a certificate qualification (36.4%), working over 40 hrs per week (71.4%) with 40.7% working over 49 hrs per week  for a weekly income of under $1249 per week (63.4%) (under $65,000 annually) in the construction industry (25%) or business services (21%), as an independent contractor (53.2%) in a non-incorporated business (55.8%) without employees (63.4%), operating from home and expects to be in that business for the next year (95%) having already been in business for over 20 yrs (24.0%)

  • Females (32.1%)
    Are likely to be aged between 35 to 44 years old (27.7%) family woman (88.3%), with a Year 12 education (58.3%) and a diploma or degree (33.2%), working under 34 hrs per week (59.6%) with 15.1% working over 49 hrs per week, for a weekly income of under $1249 per week (67.8%) (under $65,000 annually) with 17.8% earning less than $26,000 annualy in the business services industry (24.2%, home/health services (22.3%) or retail/distribution services (17.4%),  in a non-incorporated business (61.0%) such as a shop or regular service provider (60.8%)without employees (66.1%), operating from home and expects to be in that business for another year (94%) having already been in business for 3 to 5 years (20.6%)
